The importance of caring

Success in life is not just about IQ. There are more and more studies pointing to the importance of Emotion Intelligence (EQ) as the most important skill for kindergarten readiness. As a former social worker, I weave those skills into our everyday lives. We support each other when one of us is struggling. One of the most poignant moments is of my 2 year old soon sharing space and offering a gentle back pat in his pre-verbal way to a distressed and crying child who would not accept support otherwise. We talk about our feelings, frustrations, mistakes and how we cope regularly. I work with each child in their own way to regulate their emotions. We carry this message to the community as well by cleaning up litter in the park we frequent and fundraising for the Children's Hospital. Here is an article that supports what I do.
